Avoiding the Irrelevant  Quran  وَقُل لِعِبادي يَقولُوا الَّتي هِيَ أَحسَنُ إِنَّ الشَّيطانَ يَنزَغُ بَينَهُم إِنَّ الشَّيطانَ كانَ لِلإِنسانِ عَدُوًّا مُبينًا
 
Tell My bondmen to speak that which is kindlier. Lo! the devil soweth discord among them. Lo! the devil is for man an open foe.

Avoiding the Irrelevant  Hadith  عَنْ أَبِىْ هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِىَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ ﷺ : مِنْ حُسْنِ إِسْلاَمِ الْمَرْءِ تَرْكُهُ مَالاَ يَعْنِيْهِ . ( رواه التر مذى وقال : هذا حديث غريب ، باب حد يث من حسن اسلام المرء ...... رقم : )
 
Abu Hurairah Radiyallahu 'anhu narrates that Rasullullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam said: The excellence and good observance of Islam by a man is to leave aside what does not concern him. (Tirmidhi)

Avoiding the Irrelevant  Hadith  عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ رَضِىَ اللهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ رَسُوْلِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ : مَنْ يَضْمَنْ لِىْ مَا بَيْنَ لَحْيَيْهِ وَمَا بَيْنَ رِجْلَيْهِ أَضْمَنْ لَهُ الْجَنَّةَ . ( رواه البخارى ، باب حفظ اللسان ، رقم : )
 
Sahl ibn Sa'd Radiyallahu 'anhu narrates that Rasullullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam said: He who guarantees me of what is between his jaws and what is between his legs, I shall guarantee him Paradise. (Bukhari)

Avoiding the Irrelevant  Quran  إِذْ تَلَقَّوْنَهُ بِأَلْسِنَتِكُمْ وَتَقُولُونَ بِأَفْوَاهِكُم مَّا لَيْسَ لَكُم بِهِ عِلْمٌ وَتَحْسَبُونَهُ هَيِّنًا وَهُوَ عِندَ اللَّـهِ عَظِيمٌ ﴿١٥﴾ وَلَوْلَا إِذْ سَمِعْتُمُوهُ قُلْتُم مَّا يَكُونُ لَنَا أَن نَّتَكَلَّمَ بِهَـذَا سُبْحَانَكَ هَـذَا بُهْتَانٌ عَظِيمٌ ﴿١٦﴾ يَعِظُكُمُ اللَّـهُ أَن تَعُودُوا لِمِثْلِهِ أَبَدًا إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ ﴿١٧﴾
 
When ye welcomed it with your tongues, and uttered with your mouths that whereof ye had no knowledge, ye counted it a trifle. In the sight of Allah it is very great. Wherefor, when ye heard it, said ye not: It is not for us to speak of this. Glory be to Thee (O Allah)! This is awful calumny. Allah admonisheth you that ye repeat not the like thereof ever, if ye are (in truth) believers.

Avoiding the Irrelevant  Hadith  عَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ رَضِىَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِرَسُوْلِ اللهِ ﷺ : أَخْبِرْنِىْ بِأَمْرٍ أَعْتَصِمُ بِهِ ، فَقَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ ﷺ : أَمْلِكْ هٰذَا وَأَشَارَ إِلىٰ لِسَانِهِ . ( رواه الطبرانى باسناد واحدهما جيد ، مجمع الزوائد : )
 
Harith ibn Hisham Radiyallahu 'anhu narrates: I equired Rasullullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam: Tell me something wh may hold to firmly. Rasullullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam po nted towards his tongue and said: Control this. (Tabrani, Majma-uz-zawaid)

Avoiding the Irrelevant  Quran  وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَشْهَدُونَ الزُّورَ وَإِذَا مَرُّوا بِاللَّغْوِ مَرُّوا كِرَامًا
 
And those who will not witness vanity, but when they pass near senseless play, pass by with dignity.

Avoiding the Irrelevant  Hadith  عَنْ أَبِىْ جُحَيْفَةَ رَضِىَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : قَالَ قَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ ﷺ : أَىُّ الأَعْمَالِ أَحَبُّ إِلَى اللهِ ؟ قَالَ : فَسَكَتُوا فَلَمْ يُجِبْهُ أَحَدٌ ، قَالَ : هُوَ حِفْظُ اللِّسَانِ . ( رواه البيهقى فى شعب الا يمان : )
 
Abu Juhaifah Radiyallahu 'anhu narrates that Rasullullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam asked the Sahabah Radiallahu 'anhum Which deed is the most pleasing to Almighty Allah? Everyone kept quiet and did not reply. Rasullullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam said. It is to guard one's tongue. (Baihaqi)

Avoiding the Irrelevant  Quran  وَإِذَا سَمِعُوا اللَّغْوَ أَعْرَضُوا عَنْهُ وَقَالُوا لَنَا أَعْمَالُنَا وَلَكُمْ أَعْمَالُكُمْ سَلَامٌ عَلَيْكُمْ لَا نَبْتَغِي الْجَاهِلِينَ
 
And when they hear vanity they withdraw from it and say: Unto us our works and unto you your works. Peace be unto you! We desire not the ignorant.

Avoiding the Irrelevant  Hadith  عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِىَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ ﷺ : لاَ يَبْلُغُ الْعَبْدُ حَقِيْقَةَ الإِيْمَانِ حَتّى يَخْزُنَ مِنْ لِسَانِهِ . ( رواه الطبر انى فى الصغير والا وسط وفيه داؤد بن هلال ، ذكره ابن ابى الحاتم ولم يذكر فيه ضعفا ، وبقية رجاله رجال الصحيح غير زهير بن عبادوقد وثقه جماعة ، مجمع الزوائد . )
 
Anas ibn Malik narrates Rasullullah Sallallahu alaihi wasallam said: A slave of Allah cannot attain the reality of Iman, until he guards his tongue. (Tabarani, Majma-uz-Zawid)

Avoiding the Irrelevant  Quran  يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِن جَاءَكُمْ فَاسِقٌ بِنَبَإٍ فَتَبَيَّنُوا أَن تُصِيبُوا قَوْمًا بِجَهَالَةٍ فَتُصْبِحُوا عَلَى مَا فَعَلْتُمْ نَادِمِينَ
 
O ye who believe! If an evil-liver bring you tidings, verify it, lest ye smite some folk in ignorance and afterward repent of what ye did.

Avoiding the Irrelevant  Hadith  عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ رَضِىَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُوْلَ اللهِ ! مَا النَّجَاةُ ؟ قَالَ : أَمْلِكْ عَلَيْكَ لِسَانَكَ ، وَلْيَسَعْكَ بَيْتُكَ ، وَابْكِ عَلىٰ خَطِيْئَتِكَ . ( رواه التر مذى وقال : هذا حديث حسن ، باب ماجاء فى حفظ اللسان ، رقم : )
 
Uqba ibn 'Amir Radiyallahu 'anhu narrates that I asked: O Rasulallah! What is the way to salvation? He said: Control your tounge, remain in your house and weep over your sins(Tirmidhi)

He uttereth no word but there is with him an observer ready

Avoiding the Irrelevant  Hadith  عَنْ أَبِىْ هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِىَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ ﷺ : مَنْ وَقَاهُ اللهُ شَرَّمَا بَيْنَ لَحْيَيْهِ وَشَرَّمَا بَيْنَ رِجْلَيْهِ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ . ( رواه التر مذى وقال : هذا حديث حسن صحيح ، باب ما جاء فى حفظ اللسان ، رقم : )
 
Abu Hurairah Radiyallahu 'anhu narrates that Rasullullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam said: Whom Allah saves from the evil of that which is between his jaws and the evil of that which is between his legs, he will enter Paradise. (Tirmidhi)

Avoiding the Irrelevant  Hadith  عَنْ أَبِىْ سَعِيْدٍ الْخُدْرِىِّ رَضِىَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : جَاءَ رَجُلٌ أِلَى النَّبِىِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُوْلَ اللهِ ! أَوْصِنِىْ ، فَقَالَ ( فِيْمَا أَوْصَى بِهِ ) : وَاخْزُنْ لِسَانَكَ إِلاَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍ ، فَإِنَّكَ بِذٰلِكَ تَغْلِبُ الشَّيْطَانَ . ( وهو بعض الحديث ) ( رواه ابويعلى وفى اسناده ليث بن ابى سليم وهو مدلس ، قال المحقق : الحديث حسن ، مجمع الزوائد : )
 
Abu Sa'id Khudri Radiyallahu 'anhu narrates that a man came to Nabi Sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam and said: O Rasulallah! Advise me. He advised (amongst other things): Protect your tongue except for good. Undoubtedly, by this you will overcome Shaitan. (Majma-'uz- Zawaid)

Avoiding the Irrelevant  Hadith  عَنْ أَبِىْ سَعِيْدٍ الْخُدْرِىِّ رَضِىَ اللهُ عَنْهُ رَفَعَهُ قَالَ : إِذَا أَصْبَحَ ابْنُ آدَمَ فَإِنَّ الأَعْضَاءَ كُلَّهَا تُكَفِّرُ الِّسَانَ فَتَقُوْلُ : اتَّقِ اللهَ فِيْنَا فَإِنَّمَا نَحْنُ بِكَ ، فَإِنِ اسْتَقَمْتَ اسْتَقَمْنَا ، وَإِن اعْوَ جَجْتَ اعْوَ جَجْنَا . ( رواه التر مذى ، باب ماجاء فى حفظ اللسان ، رقم : )
 
Abu Sa'id Al Khudri Radiallahu 'anhu narrates that Rasullullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam said: When a man gets up in the morning, all the limbs humble themselves before the tongue and say: Fear Allah concerning us, for we are dependent on you. If you are straight we are straight, if you are crooked we are crooked. (Tirmidhi)

Avoiding the Irrelevant  Hadith  10  عَنْ أَبِىْ هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِىَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : سُئِلَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ أَكْثَرِ مَا يُدْخِلُ النَّاسَ الْجَنَّةَ ، قَالَ : تَقْوَى اللهِ وَحُسْنُ الْخُلُقِ وَسُئِلَ عَنْ أَكْثَرِ مَا يُدْخِلُ النَّاسَ النَّارَ ، قَالَ : أَلْفَمُ وَالْفَرْجُ . ( رواه التر مذى وقال : هذا حديث صحيح غريب ، باب ماجاء فى حسن الخلق ، رقم : )
 
Abu Hurairah Radiallahu 'anhu narrates that Rasullullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam was asked: What will be greatest means of people entering into Paradise? He said: Fear of Allah and good conduct. Then he was asked: What will be the greatest means of going to hell? He Said: The mouth and the Private Parts. (Tirmidhi)

Avoiding the Irrelevant  Hadith  11  عَنْ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ رَضِىَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ : جَاءَ أَعْرَابِىٌ إِلىٰ رَسُوْلِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُوْلَ اللهِ ! عَلِّمْنِىْ عَمَلاً يُدْخِلْنِى الْجَنَّةَ ، فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيْثَ فِى أَمْرِهِ إِيَّاهُ بِالإِعْتَاقِ وَفَكِّ الرَّقَبَةِ وَالْمِنْحَةِ وَغَيْرِ ذٰلِكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ : فَإِنْ لَمْ تُطِقْ ذٰلِكَ فَكُفَّ لِسَانَكَ إِلاَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍ . ( رواه البيهقى فى شعب الا يمان :
 
Bara ibn -'Azib Radiyallahu 'anhuma narrates that a villager came to Rasullullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam and said' O Rasulallah! Tell me such a deed which may take me to Paradise He mentioned some deeds: To set slaves free, to relieve the neck from the burden of debt, and to gift an animal to benefit others from its milk and besides some other deeds. And then said: If you cannot do so then restrain your tongue to speak nothing but good. (Baihaqi)

Avoiding the Irrelevant  Hadith  12  عَنْ أَسْوَدَبْنِ أَصْرَمَ رَضِىَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُوْلَ اللهِ أَوْصِنِىْ ، قَالَ : تَمْلِكُ يَدَكَ ، قُلْتُ فَمَاذَا أَمْلِكُ إِذَا لَمْ أَمْلِكْ يَدِىْ ؟ قَالَ : تَمْلِكُ لِسَانَكَ ، قُلْتُ : فَمَا ذَا أَمْلِكُ إِذَا لَمْ أَمْلِكْ لِسَانِىْ ؟ قَالَ : لاَ تَبْسُطْ يَدَكَ إِلاَّ إِلىٰ خَيْرٍ وَلاَ تَقُلْ بِلِسَانِكَ إِلاَّ مَعَرُوْقًا . ( رواه الطبر انى ، واسناده حسن ، مجمع الزوائد : )
 
Aswad ibne-Asram Radiyallahu 'anhu narrates that he requested: O Rasulallah! Advise me. He said: Control your hands I said- If my hands are not in my control, then what else can be in my control'* Rasullullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam said: Control your tongue I said: If my tongue is not in my control, then what else can be in my control? He then said: Do not use your hands except for good works and do not say from your tongue except what is good. (Tabrani Majma-'uz-Zawaid)

Avoiding the Irrelevant  Hadith  13  عَنْ أَسْلَمَ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ أَنَّ عُمَرَبْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِىَ اللهُ عَنْهُ اطَّلَعَ عَلىٰ أَبِىْ بَكْرٍ وَهُوَ يَمُدُّ لِسَانَهُ ، قَالَ : مَا تَصْنَعُ يَا تَصْلِيْفَةَ رَسُوْلِ اللهِ ؟ قَالَ : إِنَّ هَذَا الَّذِىْ أَوْرَدَنِىْ الْمَوَارِدَ ، إِنَّ رَسُوْلَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ : لَيْسَ شَىْءٌ مِنَ الْجَسَدِ إِلاَّ يَشْكُوْ ذَرَبَ اللِّسَانِ عَلىٰ حِدَّتِهِ . ( رواه البيهقى فى شعب الا يمان : )
 
Aslam Rahimahullah narrates that 'Umar ibn Khattab Radiyallahu 'anhu saw Abu Bakr pulling his tongue. 'Umar asked: O Khalifah of Rasulullah! What are you doing? He said: Indeed this tongue has brought me to the place of destruction. Rasullullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam said: There is no part of the body that does not complain to the tongue of its sharpness for its speaking evil. (Baihaqi)
